SPRINGing Along
Yes, it snowed today. The heavens may be a bit confused, but down on the ground plants are busy with new growth and flowers.
Many people do not realize that all trees flower, not just the ones we usually think of like dogwood. Right now, silver maple
and red maple
have wonderful color that stands out against the architecture of the tree and its neighbors that are not yet in bloom. If you look at the blossom closely, you will see how delicate and intricate it is. From a distance you can appreciate the beautiful color that it adds to the landscape.
Another plant that is in bloom is wintersweet. The flowers are fragrant and can be cut and brought into the house to enjoy. Wintersweet is a multi-stemmed shrub that adds interest and fragrance to the landscape.
On the ground crocuses in many colors have been blooming and have been joined by Siberian squill and daffodils.
If you like what you see, now is a good time to find out how to use these plants to advantage, for example, naturalizing a field or lawn. Then, find out where you may buy them, and when they are available so you may plant them in time to enjoy them next spring.
The landscape is filled with color if you just know where to look!
