Plant of the Month

At this time of year, one thing is for certain. No matter how grateful our hearts are, winter is a bleak and drab thought after the lights and decor of holiday traditions are removed and tucked away till next year. The sentiment in the quote above hardly seems helpful, does it? Custom Gardens knows otherwise, and we would like to help your imagination along — so much so that we are eliminating the December plant of the month and offering you many suggestions instead to lend to our point:

There is a lot of color if you know where to look.

In the Garden With Ellen

Birds can offer wonderfully active punches of color! Cardinals in particular are local to the area and bright red. Keep your eyes peeled while winter wandering, or add a birdfeeder to your landscape.

Red twig dogwood and yellow twig dogwood are beautiful among backgrounds of either green grass or blankets of white snow.

If you are looking for something in the flowering plant variety, hellebores come in a variety of color and are blooming now.

Tassle fern (Polystichum polyblepharum) is a lovely way to add green in the winter months and was our November plant of the month. See the November 2012 edition of this newsletter for more details on this hardy evergreen.

The Harbor Dwarf is a low compact nandina that is hardy, deer resistant, evergreen, and has green summer foliage that turns bright red in the autumn and through winter. This plant prefers to be left alone, so don’t prune it to pieces. It’s great as an accent or in a sweep of color.

The PJM rhododendron is another type of flowering plant. Offering dark purple/plum foliage in the winter, these are a good year-round addition to the landscaping in your yard. And while you won’t see blooms now, you can expect them toward the start of spring. In the picture we’ve included for you here, the beginnings of bud are visible.

The Japanes maple (Sango Kaku) is another treat. I can look out my very own window right now to see them in their bright coral glory.

Exfoliating bark provides an interesting method for color to make its way into the wintry outdoors. You can find exfoliating bark incrape myrtles, which we highlighted in this year’s August edition. Hues of red, yellow, tan, etc., are visible and quite colorful. Exfoliating bark is also found on the buttonwood sycamore (Platanus).

Mediterranean Carnea, also known as heather, will bloom in March and is available in white or pink.

Winterberry (Ilex verticillata) offers bright red berries. Not only is this plant pretty, but it is also an excellent food source for the colorful birds you hope to attract to your yard to play.

For the indoors, dried flower arrangements are a lovely way to add color — maintenance-free, no less. Custom Gardens can provide this for you in addition to all of the other ideas you see here (and many more).

Plant of the Month

As winter begins to make its appearance again, we have selectedJapanese tassel fern (Polystichum) as our plant of the month. Native to Japan and Korea, yet hardy in zones 6-8, this plants grows in ‘clumps’, which are actually called crowns. Tassel ferns exhibit a glossy shimmer and look very nice mixed amidst your hosta garden or shade garden. The pictures we have included for you are of the species polyblepharum, which means “many eyelashes.” Look closely and you will see why!

In the Garden With Ellen

With a lot of talk still revolving around Super Storm Sandy, it’s important to remember that it doesn’t take a storm like Sandy to wreak havoc with your landscape. Snow, heavy rains, wind, ice, and extreme fluctuations in temperature play in your yard and damage both plantings and property. Here are a few simple tips from Custom Gardens:

1) Keep branches and shrubs off the house, ensuring that trees overhanging the house are cut back.

2) Prune trees and shrubs with dead/dying branches or stems, or remove the plant before it falls and causes damage.

3) Use a broom or other appropriate tool to brush heavy snow off of shrubs to avoid damage.

4) Don’t plant under power lines if the plant will grow into the power line–the result is either jeopardized power or a tree fated to be butchered to keep it clear of the lines.

5) Ornamental pots, planters, lawn furniture, etc. can cause major damage in a high wind; take them inside, cover them up, or secure them in some way so they don’t become missiles.

In the News

I’m delighted to be a board member of Healing Art Works, a local organization that raises funds to commission original works of art. These pieces are then donated to healthcare facilities to aid in inpatient healing. Is it any surprise that many of them are the artists’ renditions of various landscapes? The reasoning is simple–whether you are looking out your own window or within a work of art–landscapes, nature, and the plants contained therein offer a uniquely peaceful healing experience.

Goldenrod (Solidago) is just perfect for this time of year in our area and anywhere else zoned 4-9. Luckily for onlookers, it’s not the allergy source that many believe it to be! Blame those sneezes and stuffy noses on ragweed instead. Goldenrod, which means “to make whole,” is low maintenance, attracts butterflies, and fares well in clay soil. This hearty perennial provides late summer color and wonderful cut flowers for your indoor decor. And what a multi-tasker! It is also often used as a diuretic and topically to heal wounds. While it comes in all shapes and sizes, I particularly enjoy the little lemon goldenrod (Solidago hybrida “Little Lemon” ‘Dansolitlem’). This dwarf version grows to be about 24 inches tall.

In the Garden with Ellen

Now that the temperatures are getting cooler, it is time to start thinking about what plants to cut back in the fall. However, some plants do not want a fall haircut. These plants do much better when they are cut back in the spring. The following are some popular plants that will really reward you if they are cut back in the spring:

Lavender: Wait until spring to cut these beauties back after the plant has put out new foliage. If you cut in the autumn, you run the risk of them not wintering over at all.

Caryopteris: Leave this late bloomer alone until spring as well. In fact, we recommend that you wait until the month of May makes its entrance to head out and cut your caryopteris way back–almost to the ground–to pave the way for a full, luscious shrub … instead of one that’s woody.

Buddleia: Chopping into this too early will also result in a plant that looks sparse and woody. You can cut this one to the ground in May too, and by June or July, you will find a 5-6 foot established plant, covered with flowers!

Red Twig Dogwood: The secret to keeping this plant red in winter is quite simple; it is the new, young stems that turn red in the winter.Leave the plant alone for about three years and enjoy the winter color. After that, cut the plant to the ground in the early spring. You will be rewarded with a full, shrubby plant that very season, one which has brilliant red stems in the winter.

We’re taking somewhat of a different approach to our plant of the month for August — types that fare well in dry conditions, and specifically in this climate area, Zones 6-9.

There are many different kinds of plants to use in your landscape that do well in dry areas. And we’re not just talking flowers! These include shrubs, grasses, and even trees. To the left, you will find beautiful examples of a perennial (Creeping Phlox), a shrub/tree (Dynamite Crape Myrtle), and a tree (Eastern Red Bud) that fit the bill. Like a number of xeriscape plants, the Crape Myrtle comes in a variety of shapes and sizes. Even last month’s plant, the day lily, falls into the category of not needing large amounts water to sustain itself.

In the Garden with Ellen

As the climate is changing, we are experience more periods of heat and sustained drought. Landscaping with xeriscape plants is an excellent way to conserve water while enjoying an attractive landscape.

You may remember our newsletter from June of 2011 that spoke of xeriscaping. For those of you who are new to the Custom Gardens newsletter or would like a refresher, xeriscaping is an increasingly popular style of landscape design involving little or no irrigation or other maintenance after the initial season.

This type of landscaping actually reduces or eliminates the need for supplemental water from irrigation. Not only is this style environmentally responsible, but the types of plants used to xeriscape often have an extended bloom time, which is particularly attractive to garden owners.

In a drought like the one we are experiencing now, it’s a good idea to consider the xeriscaping approach. If you are interested in integrating a xeriscape design, Custom Gardens offers consultations, installation, and maintenance of designs that are beautiful, low-maintenance, and environmetally conscious.

Plant of the Month

Our plant on spotlight this month is the Hemerocallis, or daylily. We have found that many people who don’t like orange make an exception for this daylily. If you’re a fan of this perennial in your own garden, you might be aware of the reason behind its common name — they bloom for a day! Because orange daylilies are so widespread and common to woodlands and roadsides, many people believe they are native to the United States, where they grow best in zones 3-9. This is not the case. In fact, they came to our country along with seeds of other plants brought by early English settlers.

Daylilies come in many different heights, colors, and bloom periods. What’s particularly exciting about this is that, even though the bloom time isn’t incredibly long, you can plant various cultivars of this plant to bloom one right after the other! Love the idea but not up to the planning challenge? Call Custom Gardens to do it for you!

We are almost finished our work with a client who hired us in conjunction with home renovations. Having inherited many of the plants in her landscape, she had become displeased with some of the plantings. We worked with her to understand her personal style, keeping the location of plants she liked and moving others. During our work together, she became more confident about her tastes and preferences. In doing so, she realized exactly how much she wanted to be outside and read in the shade as she enjoyed her garden. We were so pleased to be able to design this vision for her, and we and invite you to stay tuned for pictures.

Our plant on spotlight this month is Knautia macedonica. Hailing from the Caucasus (mountainous region bordering Europe and Asia), Knautia macedonica is not only deer resistant, but it also fares beautifully in our local landscape. Flowering longer than almost any other plant, its seed heads then provide winter food for birds. The shape and color of this dainty beauty make it a wonderful accent to larger leaved foliage, as well as flat or daisy-like flowers. Like our last plant of the month, we suggest you consider incorporating these underutilized additions into your landscape design!

Is icky, powdery mildew plaguing your precious plants? Phlox, lilac, and peony are particularly susceptible. While we don’t spend much time helping you in the kitchen with this newsletter, we sure can include a recipe for treating what’s ailing your foliage. You will need:

1 tablespoon of baking soda

½ teaspoon of liquid soap or salad oil

1 gallon of water

After mixing the above ingredients and shaking them well, spray or sprinkle the mixture on the affected plant thoroughly–but without ending up with a pool of it in the soil. You can do so in the morning, or in the early evening. Why not at night? Because that promotes mildew. Why not during the day? Because it promotes sunburn.

Follow these instructions once, and give it a week or so to clear up. Try again if necessary. Custom Gardens routinely uses mildew-resistant versions of plants, including lilac, when our clients express interest in such flowers. We would delight in doing the same for you.

These luscious plants offer punches of green and gold. They’re wonderful in the shade, deer resistant, and require very little attention. Lonicera pileata leaves are small, simple, and a shiny, dark green. Baggesen’s Gold looks very similar, but lends a softer gold and green coloring, and it brings lots of color to your landscape! Don’t make the mistake of missing out on these underutilized plants.

We were absolutely delighted to receive a First Place ribbon. Concentrating on sweeps of color for continuity, we also focused on contrasting shapes and textures for low maintenance, all season interest. For more information on the Barnes Foundation, click here.

The sculpture adds architectural interest.

Plant of the Month
 (Used in Exhibit)

You can see from the pictures of our exhibit that we used annuals to create sweeps of color–strong burgundies and greens–to really bring color, life, and light to landscape. Notice that all of these plants are simply foliage. What is particularly fantastic about this is that you’re offered a great deal of color and grace in the way they sweep, without the task of deadheading flowers.

You can get the look that you want, including a lot of color and visual intrigue for a long period of time, in a variety of ways that are not necessarily high maintenance. Remember that green is indeed a color as well. You can accent the green of your landscape with the right shrub or tree … you may simply have to ask an expert for help. While we completed this with annuals, it can be done with perennials, trees, and shrubs as well.

Coleus is an example of an annual used in this exhibit that provides tremendous summer interest. The variegated leaves of this colorful treasure come in green, pink, yellow, black/a very rich purple, maroon, and red. A wonderful complement to many other plants that instantly brightens virtually any garden design, it is an excellent example of one of many plants available that are easy to grow and offer fantastic impact for a minimal maintenance investment.
Plant of the Month

February is a wonderful month to highlight kalanchoe. These tiny petaled little wonders display shiny, succulent leaves and come in a variety of colors, including pinks, oranges, purples, reds, and many more! Kalanchoe can grow in normal household temperatures, but not lower than 50 degrees Fahrenheit. I love to use them in my indoor designs–and do so often–as they are simply perfect for arrangements of all sorts. They are easy to grow indoors and are very successful re-bloomers.

I’ve been receiving a number of requests from readers who want to know what they can do for their plants during these winter months. Winter pruning is one of the first things that comes to mind. When plants are dormant, as they are now, it is a wonderful time to prune back excess plant material. As this is true for most (but not all) plants, be sure to check your specific plant type online. Custom Gardens helps a number of local clients with this very task and would be happy to maintain yours as well. Call us for more information.
